Six Feet Under Huguenot Street: An (Educational) Tour of the Historic Burying Ground

  • Historic Huguenot Street 60 Huguenot Street, Old Burying Ground New Paltz, NY, 12561 United States (map)

Enjoy an evening amongst the graves this autumn with Historic Huguenot Street. Join us for a guided tour of our historic "Old Huguenot Burying Ground" on Saturday evenings in October. Visiting various gravestones stretching back to the earliest generations of European settlers in New Paltz, "Six Feet Under Huguenot Street" will explore the development of the community through the final resting places of its residents. Drawing from archival records, staff will share stories from colonial funeral practices (death biscuit, anyone?) to Victorian ideas surrounding death, while showcasing to guests the evolution of gravestones in New York and what they can tell us about the traditions of the European settlers along Huguenot Street. Appropriate for all ages.

Please note due to the nature of this location—a historic burying ground, with uneven, unpaved ground and close clusters of gravestones—this tour may not be accessible for everyone. Historic Huguenot Street aims to make its programs accessible to everyone, wherever possible, with understandable limitations given the historic nature of our grounds. For more information about the accessibility of this tour, please contact our Tours & Interpretation Coordinator at (845) 870-0281 x114. It is helpful to inform us in advance if you plan to visit the site with someone who has limited mobility so that we can ensure we are prepared.
