This lecture explores the fabled “Book of Negroes,” created by English officers to enumerate Black Loyalists leaving New York City for Nova Scotia, London, and other parts of the world in the Fall of 1783. After a discussion of the book’s origins, Dr. Hodges will reveal the fate of these Black Loyalists, and the long-term significance of the dispute between the American government and its English counterpart, with some unexpected twists.
Graham Russell Gao Hodges is the George Dorland Langdon, Jr. Professor of History and Africana Studies at Colgate University. He is the author of many books, including the 2nd edition of the ‘Book of Negroes’ published by Fordham University Press in 2021.
