What was it like for courageous women in New York State to fight for the vote? What parts of our heritage – history and herstory – have we never heard before? And, one hundred years later, what other issues of equality are renewing the pull that many feel to speak out?
In NY Votes for Women: A Suffrage Centennial Anthology, twenty-two women explore these questions in a variety of engaging essays, stories, and poems.
Though the Centennial is historic, the project and the event is also a response to modern times. In the fall of 2016, Stacey Murphy and other local writers came to feel an urgency in the project in response to the unease they and other women were feeling with the events leading up to the November 2016 election, the election itself, and disturbing implications for women as our American history continues to unfold.
“A big part of the project is about making a forum for voices,” explained Murphy. While the project contains contributions from previously published, known writers, it also contains contributions from women who had not been moved to reflect on the significance of the women’s movement, or the stories of the strong women ancestors, in their own lives.

Yvonne Fisher is a psychotherapist, writer, artist, performer, and political activist. She has been a feminist for almost 50 years. Yvonne has performed her series of stories, “My Jewish Mother”, and her 2018 “My Wedding Performance Piece” in New York City, Ithaca, and regionally. She is grateful to be a part of this anthology. She is engaged in the Resistance in pursuit of peace and justice. She continues to persist.
Lisa Harris’ novels make up The Quest Trilogy: ‘Geechee Girls (winner of The Author Zone prize), Allegheny Dream, and The Raven’s Tale, all published by the Ravenna Press. Her most recent poetry books are Traveling Through Glass, with art work by Patricia Brown (2018) and Dwelling Space (2019), both from Cayuga Lake Books. Her short stories and poems have been published in numerous journals. She is lives in the Finger Lakes region of New York.
Stacey Murphy loves writing and encouraging other writers. In 2018, she joined the editor board of Cayuga Lake Books and organized a group to participate in the international day of poetry through 100 Thousand Poets for Change. In 2017 she co-edited NY Votes for Women: A Suffrage Centennial Anthology (Cayuga Lake Books); her poems appear in the 2016 anthology Wild Voices (Wildflower Poetry Press), seasonal nature journal The Avocet, and in a number of online journals and places including gratefulness.org.
