French Church (Crispell Memorial)
The
church was the focal point of the early New Paltz community,
and their original congregation was officially formed
in 1683. The first church was a primitive log structure.
The first permanent church structure was not built until
1717 and was utilized until 1773 when a larger church
was constructed for the expanding community. In 1839,
the growing community built the large brick Dutch Reformed
Church on the north end of Historic Huguenot Street.
This church remains today and is home to an active congregation.
The 1717 church was torn down in the early 19th century
and was reconstructed in 1972 based on surviving information
with funds donated by the Crispell Family Association.
The adjacent burying ground preserves the remains of many
early members of the New Paltz community and was used
through the middle of the 19th century.
