IV. - MEN OF PROMINENCE

The town has produced or fostered many men who have filled honored stations in life, and worthily sustained her character and reputation. A large number of these never aspired to nor attained public office, and yet of those who have, New Paltz has had even more than her due proportion.

The representatives of the town in the State Legislature have been: 1900-1, Philip Eltinge; Jacob J. Hasbrouck, 1822 and 1825; Reuben H. Hine, 1845; Jacob Lefever, 1863-67; and Jacob D. Wurtz, 1875-76. Those who have filled the office of sheriff have been Solomon E. Elting, 1837; Maurice Wurtz, 1855; and Abraham A. Deyo, 1858. The county treasurers have been Huram Hasbrouck, 1857; Jacob M. Hasbrouck, 1872; and William H. DeGarmo, 1860. Charles W. Deyo was county clerk in 1867. The superintendents of the poor have been Abraham A. Deyo, Jr., David Corwin, and Hiram Dakin; and the school commissioners Ralph Lefever and Dr. H.M. Bauscher.
