IX. - BURIAL PLACES

Huguenot Burying GroundThe original place of public burial used by the first settlers at New Paltz is still devoted to that use, and, considering its great antiquity, in a remarkable good condition. The bodies of many of the first settlers of the town are interred beneath its sod, their graves, unmarked by stones, long since forgotten by mortal man. "May they rest in peace."The oldest stone standing in the yard records the death on Oct. 7, 1731, of Abraham Du Bois, the last "survivor of the twelve patentees." Other inscriptions to be seen in the yard are the following:

"In memory of Josiah Eltinge, who died May 15th, 1813, aged 52 years, 9 mo. & 20 days."

Headstone of Roelof Eltinge "In memory of Roelof Elting, died Jan. 16, 1825, . 50 years, 5 months & 21 days."

"In memory of Roelof Elting, who died the 21st Febíy, 1792, aged 59 years, 6 months and 9 days."

"Here Lyeth the Body of Joseph Hasbrouck, Esqr, aged 40 years, 3 months and 18 days. Died January 28th, 1792-3/4."

"Here Lies Interred the Body of Elsie Hasbrouck, Widw of Joseph Hasbrouck, Esqr, Decíd ye 27 Day of July, 1764, Aged 73 Years, 8 Months And 3 Days."

"In memory of Noah Elting, Esqr, who departed this Life Sept., 27th, 1778, aged 57 years, and Jacomintje, his spouse, who departed this Life August 27th, 1790, aged 75 years."

NEW PALTZ RURAL CEMETERY.

New Paltz RuralAn association bearing this name was incorporated Feb. 18, 1861. Samuel D.B. Stokes was chairman of the meeting, and Edmund Eltinge secretary. The trustees chosen were William F. Du Bois, Davis Whitmore, Zachariah Bruyn, Jacob Lefever, Solomon Deyo, Elting Deyo, Philip Elting, A.V.N. Elting, and Edmund Eltinge. The proceedings were verified before N. Lefever, notary public, and recorded Feb. 22, 1861, by Silas Saxton, county clerk.

The Grounds of the association are located about a mile south of the village and comprise about 23 acres. They are neatly laid out and contain many handsome tombstones and monuments. Among the latter is one of Quincy granite, erected to the memory of the soldiers from the town who lost their lives in the Rebellion. It is four feet square at the base, eighteen feet high, and cost $900. It contains the name of the fallen heroes to whose memory it was erected.

The present trustees of the association (1880) are Zachariah Bruyn, President; Solomon Deyo, Secretary and Treasurer; A.V.N. Elting, Jacob Hasbrouck, Theodore Deyo, William F. Du Bois, Alfred Deyo, Edmund Eltinge, and another.
