The extracts displayed come from ciphering books in the HHS Archives collection. Because students learning disciplines as varied as mathematics, handwriting, spelling and surveying used them, ciphering books are an excellent source for documenting the early history of education.

Rachel Elting Ciphering Book, 1803-1812 Rachel Elting (E-60) was born on March 17, 1792 to Solomon Elting and Cornelia LeFevre. She married Dr. John Bogardus on June 24, 1820. Together they had six children. She died December 27, 1831 and is buried in the "Old Huguenot Burying Ground."
