Collection Description
The collection consists of miscellaneous papers of various
ancestors of collector John Winfield Deyo I-1221 (b. 1921) (1). The
two individuals primarily represented in the collection include John
Elting (1773-1827), and Carrie A. Disbrow (1858-1920), wife of
Ernest Elmore Deyo G-1121 (1856-1934).
The main strength of the collection is the presence of several
wills, estate inventories, and other legal papers from 1807 to 1865.
These include the will of Jannetje Hasbrouck, widow of Jacob
Hasbrouck (1807); will of Esther Wurtz, widow of George Wurtz
(1820); will and estate inventory of John Elting (1827), will of
Benjamin Ebenzer Potter of Cayuga County, NY (1833); and an estate
inventory of Blandina Potter (1865). Other legal papers include a
survey map deeds, bonds, and court papers relating to lands in
Ulster County owned by John Elting and the Hasbrouck, Wurtz and Deyo
families (1795-1836).
The correspondence of Carrie A. Disbrow Deyo consists of
postcards, greeting cards and letters from friends and relatives in
Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Brooklyn and Saranac Lake, NY from
1882-1886, and 1905-1906. The correspondents primarily discuss
family issues such as visits, vacations, children, weddings, and
health concerns. Brief descriptions of leisurely pursuits such as
picnics, operas, festivals and automobile rides also abound. Several
of the letters and greeting cards from 1905 discuss the death of
Mrs. Deyo's father. Overall, the handwriting in the letters is quite
legible. Stamped envelopes and decorative greeting cards have been
separated from the correspondence and are available by special
request only.
Other items in the collection include albumen print photographs
of Mauritus W. Deyo F-603 (1819-1898) and his wife Mary Jane
Winfield (1827-1901); and a miniature book entitled History of the
Bible (1827), containing the signature of Carrie A. Disbrow.
In addition to this collection, the Huguenot Historical Society
also maintains four other collections of papers pertaining to the
Deyo family. They include the Mary Deyo Papers (ca. 1850-1932),
Jessie B. VanWagenen Deyo Papers (1889-1929), Deyo Family
Papers(1675-1870), and the William S. Deyoe Papers (1892-1972).
Researchers may also want to consult the Huguenot Historical Society
Bible and Religious Book Collection, which includes several Bibles
with Deyo family history.
