Biographical Sketch
Jessie B. VanWagenen was born in 1870 to Jacob A. Wagenen and
Nettie Smith and apparently grew up in the hamlet at Creek Locks in
the town of Rosendale, NY. On September 6, 1893 she married Abram W.
Deyo, professor at Claverack College in Claverack, NY. Mr. and Mrs.
Deyo removed to Elmira, NY at least by 1918. Mrs. Deyo died in 1938
and was buried in Rosendale.
Collection Description
Records include handwritten letters between Jessie B. VanWagenen
and her future husband Abram Deyo (1892-1893) while he was at
Claverack and she at Rosendale, and between Mrs. Deyo and family
members while she was living in Elmira, Chemung County, NY. Of
interest are letters written to Mrs. Deyo from her brother Simon B.
Van Wagenen, contractor at Rondout (city of Kingston), Ulster
County, NY who served as Chair of the Committee of Internal Affairs
in the New York State Assembly, and letters written to Jean S. Deyo
in the 1920's discussing marriage. The familial connection between
Jean S. Deyo and Jessie B. VanWagenen Deyo is uncertain. Also in the
collection are deeds, receipts, accounts, tax statements and legal
correspondence relating to the settlement of Abram Deyo's estate
after his death in 1923. Other papers include newspaper clippings
and wedding and graduation invitations pertaining to families and
friends at New Paltz, NY (1889-1894), and an unidentified photograph
of a young man. The handwriting in most of the letters is quite
legible. Access to envelopes from this collection is available upon
request.
