On this special Saturday, we "throw open the doors" on the Street.  Our open house day features all of the museum houses.  Added to that is a street fest of demonstrations, period vendors and activities designed to give visitors a feel of New Paltz long ago.

Meet the widow Maria Deyo, who will share her story of the journey over from Europe, followed by those early days in Nieuw Dorp before she and her husband set out with their friends to create their own community — a place they called Nieuw Paltz after the first place of refuge they found in Germany before coming to the New York colony.  What was it all like, and what was it like to be a widow in charge of your family's property and business?  Maria will fill you in.

Or step inside one of our famous stone houses.  Maybe it's where your ancestors lived.  Or maybe you've already been curious.  Old New Paltz Day is the one day a year when the whole street is open for you to see.

When you done, visit our flintknapper who, right before your eyes, will show you how Native Americans made projectile points and tools from local rocks.  Make buttons by hand, as they did in the 1700s.  Visit with farmyard animals that once ran free around the houses of stone.

And when you're hungry, stop by the Reformed Church for some old-time festival favorites or enjoy some ice cream courtesy of Stewart's Shops.

Old New Paltz Day.  A homecoming.  An essential part of your visit to New Paltz.

Footsteps of Our Founders

This year's event features a special booth for individuals who want to learn more about their New Paltz Huguenot or Dutch ancestors.  Volunteers will be on hand to assist with basic genealogical research.  Completing a short genealogy form in advance is suggested.

Parking

There are several options for parking at Old New Paltz Day.  They are as follows:

  • HHS parking lots on Broadhead Avenue between Chestnut and Huguenot Streets.  There are a small number of spaces available.  Priority is given to those who are disabled or elderly.
  • Municipal Parking Lot on the southern end of Huguenot Street near the river and the Gardens for Nutrition.  To access this lot, proceed west on Main Street and turn right immediately before the bridge onto Huguenot Street.
  • New Paltz Central School District Office parking lot at the corner of Chestnut and Henry W. DuBois Streets.
  • The new Park and Ride lot on North Chestnut Street across from Stewarts.
  • The parking lot at BOCES of Ulster County on Route 32 North (Chestnut Street).  This lot, which is the largest, is approximately 1/2 mile north of Historic Huguenot Street.  Individuals can take the free UCAT shuttle bus to the event or walk down the Rail Trail to the event.
  • There is free on-street parking on Church Street (one block east of the site) and metered parking along North Chestnut Street.
  • There are municipal parking lots on Plattekill Avenue. These are metered spaces.  Proceeding west on Main Street, turn right at Starbucks.  The first lot is on the right just beyond Starbucks.  The second lot is next to Village Hall.
